Sports Medicine Consultant
James H. Lubowitz, MD is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon and has additionally completed accredited fellowship subspeciality training in orthopaedic sports medicine. Dr. Lubowitz is Founding Director, emeritus, of the Taos Orthopaedic Institute Sports Medicine Fellowship and is a member in good standing of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. In addition, Dr. Lubowitz has published more than 250 peer-reviewed, PubMed cited original scientific and review articles and editorials on orthopaedic surgery and orthopaedic sports medicine, including articles published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. His extensive experience as a team physician includes more than 20 years as a member of the medical staff for the US Ski and Snowboard Team, and he continues to serve in this capacity. In addition, Dr. Lubowitz served as Medical Staff for New Mexico Highlands University for more than 20 years. These positions, plus coverage of other high school and college teams, has given him a broad base of expertise for consulting on injury prevention, risk management and risk prevention.
Sports Medicine Expert Witness
In addition to sports injury and risk consulting, Dr. Lubowitz has also served extensively as a sports injury expert witness and as an expert treating physician. He brings his research expertise and experience to his forensic expert reporting and expert testimony. Dr. Lubowitz provides evidence based opinion and testimony and communicates complex ideas clearly. He has specific case experience regarding biomechanics and orthopaedic sports medicine injuries in football, soccer, running, tennis, basketball, wrestling, skiing, snowboarding, baseball, softball, volleyball, track and field, and ultra and extreme sports, as well as regarding occupational injuries.
Dr. Lubowitz has served in cases regarding the head and neck, and the spine and extremities, including upper extremity, wrist and hand, and shoulder and elbow, and lower extremity including hip, thigh, knee, leg, and foot and ankle. He has testified broadly with regard to fracture and ligament and soft tissue injuries. All injuries are unique and vary with regard to biomechanics and causality, diagnosis and prognosis, and cost and outcome. Likewise, athletes are unique and vary with regard to gender, age ranging from pediatric to geriatric, and level of play and expertise. Athletes who suffer injury are special patients because of performance and return to play issues which can be physiological and psychological, and Dr. Lubowitz has an empathetic attitude based upon his experience as an athlete, a physician, a scholar, a researcher, a team physician, and a past patient. Analysis of sports injury and injury management has ethical implications for the patient and often, in cases of elite or professional performers, for the sports industry. Safety and risk management is based on comprehensive understanding of these diverse issues and individuals and sports. As an experienced expert witness and consultant, Dr. Lubowitz takes pride in a broad and deep understanding of these unique issues.
