Ligament Treatments

Ligaments are like ropes that hold the knee joint together. Knee ligament injuries are common among athletes, and can also occur as the result of everyday accidents. While many associate a ligament injury with the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), there are other knee ligaments that can also sustain injury. The knee cruciate ligaments include the ACL and PCL (posterior cruciate ligament), while the knee collateral ligaments include the lateral collateral ligament (LCL) and medial collateral ligament (MCL). Each of these ligaments can become injured in isolation, or along with another ligament, during sports or everyday living activities. In addition, multiple ligaments can tear as a result of a knee dislocation, or in association with a knee fracture, or other serious knee injury. Ligament injuries may or may not need reconstructive surgery. Some ligaments can be treated non-operatively, while others will need surgical intervention. Dr. Lubowitz will conduct a thorough history and physical examination, and will assess imaging studies in order to assess each specific patient and injury, in order to allow him to recommend the best knee treatment approach.
